First thing I noticed when we walked in was the size of this place. For a Downtown restaurant it’s very spacious inside. I was trying to remember what business used to be here. If my memory serves me correctly it was a discount store that had random stuff in the window display, but I could be wrong about that. Therapy uses every foot of the huge open space. They have a full downstairs dining area and a cool little upstairs dining area located above the kitchen in the back of the restaurant. Complete with a full bar area serving all types of drinks and draft beer, this is a great place for a quick bite or a nice dinner out.
For drinks we went with their house Berry Sangria (not pictured) and a cold freshly poured glass of Lagunitas IPA (not pictured.) If your a fan of Sangria like Kim is then the berry sangria is a must try. It will have you fishing out the fresh berries on the bottom of the glass when your done drinking it. The menu here is broken up into different sections depending on your dining style. They have whole entrees for a single person to enjoy or if your like us, you’ll enjoy their selection of smaller dishes. Their small dishes are served tapas style. They come out as they are ready and each dish is usually enough for 3 to 4 people to share. After looking at the menu for several minutes we decided to try the Oxtail Empanadas, Super Mac with Bacon and their Filet Tartar.
The first dish we started with was the Oxtail Empanadas. Crunchy and flaky on the outside with tasty Oxtail filling on the inside. They are served with a harissa lime creme fraiche dipping sauce. The combination of that warm crunch from the empanada with Oxtail filling, mixed with the fresh taste from the dipping sauce made it a great dish to start with. It got our taste buds excited for what was next.
Super Mac with Bacon. Need I say more? I am a fan of Mac and Cheese and the Super Mac here does not disappoint. You can get the Super Mac prepared by itself or add your choice of meat to it. We went with the bacon, mmmm….bacon. The Super Mac is made with Orechiette pasta and Therapy’s signature cheese blend. The pasta was perfect, big enough to hold all that cheese and bacon without that doughy texture you get from bigger pastas. The cheese blend is scrape the bowl, fork and any other area that the cheese has touched good. Up until now my favorite Mac and Cheese has been at Carson Kitchen just up the street, but with the addition of bacon this Mac and Cheese dish just might be my new favorite.
Talk about saving the best for last. The Filet Tartar here was so good, Kim was talking about getting some the very next day. The tartar is served in a glass jar topped with egg yolk confit and parmesan and has a cranberry mixture inside the glass lid. It is also served with pickles and grilled bread (you may need more bread, lol.) I took the grilled bread and spread a little of the cranberry mixture on it, topped it with the tartar egg confit parmesan mixture and WOW! The flavor was amazing and can only be described as “I could eat 100 of these!” It was hands down our favorite dish of the night.
We will definitely be back to sample more of the menu, there were a few other dishes that really sounded good but after 3 dishes we had our fill for the night. Open for lunch, dinner and the late night crowd, Therapy is a great spot to hit anytime of the day. So the next time your Downtown and your hunger needs a fix, check yourself into Therapy and satisfy your cravings.
